The author grew up in the small town of Englewood, Kansas. Englewood was such a small community that he was almost forced to participate in all the school’s activities. He lettered in football, basketball, and track. But when you figure his sophomore year there were fewer than 30 kids in high school, he had no choice. He worked during the summers bucking alfalfa bales, and after graduating he left that area to find better work.
In 1961 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his twenty years on active duty he was stationed many places. He spent several years in Germany, two tours of duty in Vietnam, brief assignments at Fort Gordon, GA., Fort Hood, TX., Fort Monmouth, NJ., and Fort Huachuca, AZ. The last years of his Army duties was as an Army Recruiter stationed at Blytheville, Ar. He also had assignments with the Army Security Agency and the 1st Signal Brigade.
His military awards are: The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 9 Campaign Stars, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Gold Recruiter’s Badge with 3 Sapphires, Gold Recruiter’s Ring.
The Governor of Kansas appointed him the Sheriff of Greeley County Kansas. He served there from 1985 until 1989.
During his working years he attended several schools. With his work history and school endeavors he has the following certificates:
Certified Licensed SocialWorker, Certified Licensed Electronic Technician, Certified Licensed Fresh Water Plant Operator, Certified Licensed Law Enforcement Officer.
He has three grown children by a previous wife. He and his present wife of twenty one years, Rose have enjoyed traveling in an RV throughout most of the United States.
